DID Aryabhata propose geocentric model or heliocentric model of the universe?
According to a few sources (one is given below), his model was definitely geocentric (centred on Earth). In some places, Aryabhata explains that the Earth spins. However, elsewhere (in a more major astronomy work) he explains the rising and setting of bodies by having the universe rotate around Earth. Some people have claimed that Aryabhata had also used or proposed a mathematical model that was heliocentric, but no sign of that is found in his writings. Only in a few obscure indirect references. It reminds me of the model proposed by Copernicus: Copernicus did NOT propose that the Sun was a the centre, but only that mathematical equations would be easier to solve if the origin of the coordinate system (the 0,0,0 point) was placed at the Sun. As it turns out, his model was NOT more precise (Copernicus kept using circular orbits and epicycles). Since Aryabhata was a mathematician more than an astronomer, it is possible that he did propose such models, but there is no direct evidence in
