Did army played important role in government structure in chile ?
Yes, indeed the army played an important role in Chile’s actual government structure. To understand this, you must know a bit of Chilean history. Chile is an independent democratic republic since 1810, but from 1973 to 1990 was gobernated by Augusto Pinochet, who rised unlawfully to power on September 11th, 1973, derrocating the actual President, Salvador Allende. Pinochet, who was a dictator for 16 years, was named by Allende General Commandant (the highest rank) of the army, so he rised to power and gobernarted with the army. During the years of dictature, the Army played a significant role in Chile, stablishing order and “silencing” the oppositors (called communists by the army). Since the return of democracy, the army’s protagonism in Chile has diminished, but it still is a very important and powerful force, in opposition of other latin american countries.
