Aracruz established its first eucalyptus plantations in Espírito Santo as of the mid 1960s. Most of the land it purchased for planting eucalyptus forests was already quite deforested due to coffee farming and a lumbering cycle in the region that had lasted for more than half a century. To have an idea, at that time more than 40 sawmills were in operation in the municipality of Aracruz alone and native and secondary timber in the region was cut down for making charcoal and other forest products. The establishment of the first plantations in Espírito Santo complied with the requirements of the legislation of that time. Nevertheless, it is a fact that the environmental legislation in the 1960s was not as stringent as it is nowadays.
