He actually jumps into his past and changes certain details. Changing certain things has a profound impact on his future, but usually not in the way he hopes/expects. Therefore he ends up going back and back and back again. Unfortunately, each jump into the past causes parts of his brain to become dysfunctional and covered with white-matter. By the end of the movie he is almost completely inept. Finally, he realizes that changing the past will only mess up the future even more, and he stops.
