They don’t do this unless they see an abnormality such as downs syndrome but they can’t get a good view of the baby to determine if that’s what they’ve seen. They don’t do it if the baby is in a funny position, they just get you to walk about, lie on your hip whilst being scanned and take a drink of water, if the baby is still in the wrong position they’ll get you to come back at a later date if they really cannot see anything that they need too. They ask your permission for this, if you don’t want it they don’t force it. I had my 20week scan done at 21weeks, my baby was facing my back, so his spine was facing my abdomen, she couldn’t really see much but she got to see everything she could to determine if there was a problem. I also got a leaflet telling me about the vaginal u/s too. Don’t worry hun!

Hi, I’m in the UK. I had a vaginal ultrasound scan at 12 weeks. They thought I was having twins so wanted a better look. It was a bleed behind my sac that’s all. Nothing to worry about they said. It doesn’t hurt at all. Don’t be alarmed by it. They use a smaller scanner and put a condom over the end. Then rub a bit of lube on and put it in. It doesn’t hurt at all. You get to see a different angle of your baby too. I would have it done. Good luck!
