Did anybody else think Hannibal Rising was complete crap?
Alas yes. I agree with you, the other Hannibal books were marvellous. In my opinion though Hannibal Rising only made sense if you’d seen the film. I felt that Thomas Harris relied too much on the hope that the reader had already watched it. To be fair to him though, the book was written AFTER he’d been (in a way) forced to write the screenplay. (I read that the producers of Hannibal Rising asked Harris to write the screenplay, but also told him that the film would be made with or without his cooperation. So he didnt have much choice but to create Hannibal Rising.) I suppose the hurried scribblings of the book were typed up and published in order to save him some face.
Totally agree, I didn’t even finish reading it it was that bad. I found it uninteresting and boring – nothing compared to the other 3. I think maybe it was rushed, and he couldn’t think of anything to put in it. I was hoping for something more shocking and gorey, but instead got some crap war story. The eating of his sister was the best part.
