The intention of those ancient games was that, for the brief period of the games, the city states of that part of the world, who might normally be at war with each other, could get together and meet on neutral ground and engage in more friendly competition, to honor their best athletes and to honor their gods. The modern olympic games were created for similar reasons, except that too often, the games are politicized, and it turns out that a nation’s “medal count” seems more meaningfull than the athlete’s individual performance. Also, look at the current example of the political protest of the Tibetan separatists, who are demonstating along the route of the Olympic torch, voicing their opinions that as long as The People’s Republic of China claims Tibet as their own, they should not be hosting the Olympics.
