Did American men have to do ational service after world war 2?
This is from the link. In the only extended period of military conscription of U.S. males during a major peacetime period, the draft continued on a more limited basis during the late 1950s and early 1960s. While a far smaller percentage of eligible males were conscripted compared to war periods, draftees by law served in the U.S. Army for two years. Elvis Presley and Willie Mays were two of the most famous people drafted during this period. I have not researched the pre Viet Nam era. However during the Viet Nam war out of the 1.7 million drafted only 43,000 did not go to the Army. The Marines got them. The Navy and Air Force (as far as I know) have not “had” to draft as they had enough volunteers to fill the ranks. You can get a “deleted” DD214 from the National Archives. It has the private info deleted. It basicly to verify that someone was in and what type discharge they were given. The 3rd link shows which Air Force records were lost in the 1973 Archives fire.
