Did all of the hippies in the 1960s and 1970s actually believe in the movement?
It’s really kind of impossible nowadays (even 40 years ago) to simply live off the land in total harmony with nature. To believe such a thing in the first place is naive. I think these kids made a point of ignoring the logistics and concentrated on just believing they could somehow spontaneously morph into a better society. The focus, as I take it, was on keeping your state of mind as close to God as possible at all times, hoping for spiritual guidance toward a new utopia. This way of life is also wide open to flat out druggies who didn’t actually care.
