Did a Tacky Dress Cost Miss Jamaica the Crown?
Last night, Miss Mexico, 23-year-old Jimena Navarrete, was crowned Miss Universe. Radiant in a flowing, simple red gown, she wowed the judges in a violet bikini and spoke of strong family values in the interview portion. “I do believe that the Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.” First runner-up, Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, gave a great answer about the death penalty, which many — including myself — thought was stronger than that of Navarrete. I thought for sure the title was hers. But there was her dress! It was turquoise and lace and beaded and sparkly and … anything else you can do to a dress. It was tacky even by pageant standards, and that’s saying a lot. And her earrings challenged her head for size. Whether her attire had much to do with the final vote, we’ll probably really never know, but there’s no way it could have helped her. Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Raj, didn’t h
