Did a Mississippi High School Stage a Fake Prom To Keep Gay Couples Out?
The town of Fulton, Miss., is earning the reputation of the “meanest town in America” after a variety of news sources claim that Itawamba Agricultural High School officials staged a fake prom to keep gay students away from their real prom, which was allegedly being held at “a secret location out in the country.” Eighteen-year-old Itawamba student Constance McMillen sued the Mississippi school district earlier this year after school officials told her that she could not attend the prom with her girlfriend or wear a tux to the school-sponsored dance. When McMillen took the case to court, the school elected to cancel the prom rather than allow McMillen to attend. The case reached a somewhat happy conclusion last month, when a Mississippi judge ruled that the school had violated McMillen’s constitutional rights, and school parents agreed to host a prom at the nearby Fulton County Country Club.
