A grandmother dying of cancer who was raped in hospital may have been the victim of a fellow patient, it emerged yesterday. Her sickening ordeal happened on a ward shared with men and reignited the anger over the Government’s failure to deliver on its promises to get rid of mixed sex wards. The 71-year-old was attacked in a toilet cubicle in a London hospital in the early hours of the morning. She has told police that the rapist was a ‘white man in his early 50s’ who struck after she had got up to go to the toilet. Last night Hilary Carter, of Help the Aged, said: ‘The fact that this patient was subjected to this horrifying crime underscores repeated calls to scrap mixed sex wards. ‘The NHS is failing to deliver its pledge and as a result, patients’ privacy and dignity is unacceptably compromised.
