Despite the advances in cancer research, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. What do you think should be done to prioritize funding for breast cancer research, screening and treatment?
I don’t. There is already pink everywhere I look. There are already good treatments and education regarding breast cancer. Lung cancer and heart disease kill many, many more women. In fact, more Americans die from lung cancer each year than from breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers COMBINED (in 2005, it was 163,510 lung versus 40,410 breast). While overall cancer incidence rates are declining, lung cancer incidence rates among women continue to rise. Heart disease–American women are 4 to 6 times more likely to die of heart disease than of breast cancer. Heart disease kills more women over 65 than all cancers combined. Women are less likely to survive heart attacks than men, which means they may die from heart disease before they even know they have it. I think there needs to be wider education on the causes and prevention of the diseases that affect more people and more research into the cure of those diseases.
