The University of New England’s University Campus in Biddeford sits on the western bank of the Saco River where it meets the Atlantic. The neighborhoods around the University Campus are referred to as the coastal communities and include Hills Beach, Biddeford Pool, and Fortunes Rocks. Many of these homes are seasonal or summer cottages, but are often rented by students through the “off-season.” Downtown Biddeford and Saco are less than five miles “up river.” Both cities are a mix of commercial, industrial, retail, and residential buildings, as well as many single, double and triple family homes. Family-owned restaurants far outnumber franchised or chain restaurants.
