Dental Question, Does anyone know how long a white filling should last for?

White fillings can last a lifetime. The silver fillings were less technique sensitive. So they can be put in quickly, and hold for some period of time. The down side to them is that they are unattractive, and over time, tend to spread the tooth apart, leading to microfractures in the tooth. The white fillings bond things together. However, they require much more skill and technique sensitivity to ensure that they last a while. Also, if not polished properly, they may sometimes get discoloration around the area of the filling. It doesn’t necessarily mean it needs to be replaced, but it is a good indicator that the restoration is starting to fail. Hope this helps!

i have a white filling on my front tooth for a chip that i have on my tooth i had it over 15 before i need it replaced as it had worn down, don’t for get you don’t have to have any treatment if you don’t want it, the dentist is just suggesting you should replace it, or you could ask him why he thinks it should be replaced x

I think the coating they put on white fillings wears away quite quickly so needs to be replaced.

Get a second opinion if you wish. You need to be careful with some dentists – they sometimes like to do treatments that are not necessary. To note though, yes white fillings do generally last less time then silver fillings. 5 years is approximately the right length of time a white filling lasts – sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. White fillings do not rot away, they crack.
