Dealing with predators in sheep and got farming – how does one control them?
I recently spent a weekend on a farm in the Karoo in South Africa and was intrigued to hear about the continual challenges that farmers have in the area with predators, mostly jackals and “rooikat” where they lose many hundreds of lambs and kids on a annual basis. Some of the challenges lie in the vast expanse of the lands and the broad distribution of the watering holes. Dealing with this problem in the light of market conditions, reduced seasonal rainfall (this year) really will assist the viability of the farming in the region. Environmental considerations are also vital. Many options have been tried but each seems to have its own challenges. Surely this problem is not unique and creative solutions to this matter currently exist. Can anyone share some ideas?
