Dave, although it is a good idea to grow squash vertically to save room and minimize disease, there is not enough room in a tomato cage for squash. Squash vines do need to spread, even if it is vertically on some type of trellis or heavy netting, in order to produce large fruit.

Dave, although it is a good idea to grow squash vertically to save room and minimize disease, there is not enough room in a tomato cage for squash. Squash vines do need to spread, even if it is vertically on some type of trellis or heavy netting, in order to produce large fruit. If you do decide to grow vertically, just be sure to use cloth or some type of support for the fruit as the get bigger or you risk the weight of the fruit breaking the vines. Some gardeners even use old silk stockings. But any type of cloth will work. I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
