Customer Question: Is it possible to damage the roof shingles while cleaning?

Clearwater Roofs: Ironically enough, the answer is yes. Shingles contain small granules, and when the cleaning approach is too harsh, it can wash these granules away. Pressure washers are used to clean various parts of your home, but they should never–and we repeat never–be used on your roof. If your roof has been overcome by roof algae, which causes unsightly black streaks, we recommend cleaning it with low pressure chemicals and a low pressure rinse. If you’re unsure, call on the shingle manufacturer to get a better idea.
