There are approximately 26,000 NPS employees at the height of the summer season made up of approximately 88% permanent and 12% seasonal. In addition, there are at least 28,000 contractors working in the parks at any given time. These are concession employees and service contractors like custodians, trash removal, and administrative help. There are also 125,000 volunteers. There are several thousand construction contract workers in the parks at any given time. It would be almost impossible to count them since construction projects are always in various stages of completion.
