Current statistics suggests that 1 out 4 African-American Men and Boys are in some way imperiled in our society i.e. incarcerated, high school drop outs, experiencing early death etc.?
A -The Institute for African Man Development is very suspicious of popular statistics. We do not believe that any person or entity has invested in the wholistic and comprehensive study of African-American Men and Boys to arrive at such a broad sweeping proclamation. Most discussions around this population are not contextually grounded because they almost always focus on the negative aspects of functioning. Much of the research being conducted is special interest and have negative assumptions woven into their research structure. We build our programs based on the reality that most African-American Men and Boys are not imperiled in this society and are experiencing relative victory in their daily endeavors. We are suggesting a new approach to the study and discussion of African-American Men and Boys that includes the use of correct messages and real life variables concerning this population.
