If the roof can be coated, it should be coated when it is installed for maximum protection and roof life. But roofs up to ten years old which have never been coated can usually be coated satisfactorily for the first time. However, older roofs which have never been coated may already be too dry and brittle. If in doubt, consult a professional roofer. COMPATIBILITY Aluminum Roof Coatings can usually be applied to: metal roofs which are structurally sound, roofs previously coated with white or aluminum, asphalt-coated roofing (without gravel), smooth-surfaced composition roofing, mineral-surfaced cap sheet (the kind with the fine granules), smooth or mineral-surface “modified bitumen” roll roofing like SBS or APP (the kind which is installed with a torch).
