First off, congratulations on your new arrival! You can absolutely regain muscle tone after a C-section, but you must be realistic with your goals and allow your body time to heal. The C-section scar will shrink as your uterus shrinks and your abdominal skin retracts. You will always have a scar but generally it is low enough to be covered by panties or a bikini. Your abdominal muscles are comprised of several groups, some of which are external while others are deeper. The muscles that you notice on the front of your abdomen are your rectus abdominus – the vertical,strap-like muscles which have tendinous intersections (the “six pack”). Once your obstetrician gives you permission, a combination of cardiovascular exercise (to boost your metabolism and shed the excess weight) along with crunches and weight training should do the trick.
