Could the yeast infection (undoubtedly caused by the antibiotics) cause the proteinuria?
Answer Dear Dave, Protein in the urine (proteinuria) is one of two red flags for kidney disease. The other is blood in the urine (hematuria). “Yes”, it is possible for your daughter’s antibiotics to cause a yeast infection and “yes” it is possible for a yeast infection to produce abnormal quantities of protein in the urine. I would recommend that she stop her minocycline and complete the course of monostat. Then, six weeks after the yeast infection has resolved, I would repeat a 24 HOUR URINE COLLECTION FOR TOTAL PROTEIN and if her protein excretion is over the upper limit of normal (usually 150 or 200 mg per day) she should see a nephrologist for a work up. Right now, however, the most common cause of a situation like he has, is the yeast infection. It is my opinion that the 24 hour collections, although a real pain to perform, are important because the qualitative protein measured on a routine urinalysis is greatly influenced by the concentration of the urine and often bears little r
