In response, the Chair to the Police Authority advised Council that the future of Ipswich Police Station had been under consideration since 2004 when the Police Authority approved, in principle, replacement with a new police station, subject to a satisfactory business case. She went on to say that the current police station, built in 1966, was at the end of its useful economic life and would very shortly either have to undergo major refurbishment or total replacement. She added that due to there being insufficient space in the police station, the adjacent former Crown Court annexe had been leased in 2006 as an interim solution pending determination of the longer term plan. The Chair to the Police Authority advised Council that due to maintenance issues, it was not intended to renew this lease in 2011 even if that had been possible. She added that the custody suite within the lower ground floor would become redundant when the new Police Investigation Centre, currently scheduled for July
