Could the humble packed lunch prove a threat to a hot meals service in schools?
IT COULD mean the end of school meals as we know them in Derby. For years, parents have sent children to school in the knowledge that they would have the option of a hot meal. But those meals are now coming at a hefty price – £10 a week from November. Chellaston Infant School has decided to ask parents whether they would prefer to provide a packed lunch or for the school to provide sandwiches. Already schools are free to choose whether or not to buy-in the city’s school catering service. So, with parental agreement, it is a relatively easy step for them to opt out.
