Could Supreme Court ruling impact Bidwell Parks Easter Cross?
Any day the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to make a decision that could affect the future of a religious symbol on land inside the city of Chico. It’s the latest in the ongoing battle over the separation of church and state. In Chico’s Upper Bidwell Park, not far from the Wildwood entrance and parking area “B” stands a cross. Made of steel, anchored by cement it’s about 30 feet high and it has a beautiful view looking out toward the Bidwell Park Golf Course and Horseshoe Lake. It’s been there on city land since at least 1951. It’s used on Easter Sundays by Christians to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Ruben Martinez is the City of Chico General Services Director. He’s keeping a close eye on an upcoming decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which will soon decide the fate of a much larger cross in the city of San Diego. Martinez said “I think we’re going to have to wait until that decision comes forth and look at the circumstances of that decision, and see if it pertains to us or no
