Could someone please tell me why taking st. johns wort causes rectal bleeding?

I’ve just now read two clinical studies of the use of St. John’s Wort and they list the known side effects as “gastrointestinal upset, increased anxiety, minor palpitations, photosensitivity, fatigue, restlessness, dry mouth, headache, and increased depression.” One study mentions a very small number of cases of manic behavior. There’s no mention of rectal bleeding in either study. Since there are many causes of rectal bleeding, nearly all of them not serious, I assume one of them is at fault rather than the herbal medicine.
