Could someone please explain the “marco polo” thing to me please?

When I was a kid, we played Marco Polo in the swimming pool. You need at least three people for the game, or as many folks as will fit in the pool. This is how we played: One person would be “it” and would have to be blinfolded or keep his or her eyes shut tight. The person who was it had to tag others and located them by following their voices. The person who is “it” shouts “Marco!” and the other players have to shout “Polo!” in response. The first person who got tagged then had to be “it.” We don’t have a pool now, but my kids play this game in the living room. They take turns wearing a blindfold, yell Marco and Polo, and crash into furniture and walls. The youngest, who’s 3, cheats by lifting up the blindfold to peek. It’s one of the funniest things to watch, and my husband and I just sit and crack up at them.
