Could someone explain the story of George Washington cutting down a tree?
It’s an American fairy tale. The basic plot goes like this, George’s father comes home to find his cherry tree has been cut down… He asks George if he did it and the future president responds “I can not tell a lie father, I chopped down your cherry tree” … Now the story, which btw is completely fictional, is supposed to show that the first president was so honest he would just straight tell the truth when asked even though presumably his father’s wrath would have been terrible. (Of course in the story as I have heard it the father is so taken back by his son’s honesty as to forgive him completely on the spot) No one has ever explained to me why George would cut down a tree for no good reason or what we where supposed to learn from that part of the story.
