Geraniums like well-drained compost ( not sure what you mean by potting soil, do you mean John Innes No 2 or multipurpose?) The J.I. will hold water more than multipurpose, and will also coagulate more, drain less well, and tend to bake hard, because of its clay content, being largely earth rather than the more free-draining composts. If you use J.I. it’s a good idea to mix in some horticultural grit to open up the texture a bit. So, first make sure the compost is free-draining, and that they’re never left with their feet soaking in water – support the pots off the ground on a couple of bricks, or use clay pot feet. If the compost is properly free-draining and the pots are supported off the ground, you don’t have to worry about over-watering, as the compost will drain and the plants will be able to take what they need. If on reflection you’re not happy about your compost, at this stage you could lift them and re-plant in something more suitable, as their roots won’t have spread far if
