Could Rooneys broken foot cost England the World Cup?

This article is now out of date as it refers to the injury that England’s Wayne Rooney suffered in the lead up to the 2006 World Cup which was held in Germany. As it transpired, Rooney recovered in time to take his place in England’s World Cup squad but was lacking match fitness. I don’t believe that his injury alone cost England the World Cup but it certainly didn’t help.
