You didn’t say how big the fish were or how big their tank is. I’m assuming it’s small as it doesn’t seem to have a lid. (If you have had the fish for two years, they should be between 5-8 inches minimum, unless they’ve been kept in a tiny tank which has stunted their growth.) It’s very likely that one has eaten the other if they were hungry, especially if kept in a small tank and/or if one of them happened to die whilst you were away. Very unusual to not find any trace though, you’d normally find pieces of bone.
