Could Middle East Violence Affect World Cross Country Championships in Jordan?
The championships are set for Amman, Jordan, on March 28, a bit uncomfortably close to regional violence between Israel and Hamas. IAAF Communications Director Nick Davies states “we are keeping a close eye on the situation and we hope that by March, the armed conflict will have been resolved peacefully.” Athletics Kenya Secretary General David Okeyo says “we are keeping our fingers crossed but since we have not received any word to the contrary, we are going on with our training.” It would not be unprecedented for the IAAF to move the site of the championships if the threat of violence is still a factor in March.
