There have been a few people who have actually made a profit breeding guppies, but for every one who has, there are thousands who have lost money by breeding them. The central problem is that guppies are too common and too easily bred to sell for very much money. If you have a really fantastic strain of guppies, you could sell the very best of thier offspring for relatively high prices, but for every pair or trio of the top quality your breeding stock will produce hundreds of inferior guppies (from a sales point of view) that you’ll have to dispose of somehow, and you can’t do this until you have raised them to adulthood, so that you can tell which ones are worth saving and which are not. You would be very lucky to sell enough guppies to pay for an ad in the newspaper, not counting all the time you put into them and your expenses in food, tanks, filters, and so on.
