Could having coeliacs disease (gluten allergy) make me more likely to have lactose intolerance?
Yes, having coeliac disease can cause a lactose intolerance since the part of the intestine that is damaged in CD is the villi which contain the site that processes lactose. Most coeliacs recover the ability to eat lactose containing foods but some don’t or are also lactose intolerant. You need to be very sure that you have eliminated all the gluten from your diet. Re-examine what you are eating and make sure gluten hasn’t crept back into what you are eating. You can also get blood work again for CD and if it doesn’t show any elevated levels of antibodies then you don’t have gluten in your diet but if they are up, then it would indicate you are still exposed to gluten.
