One way the Department of Energy and Climate Change suggested the money could be spent is to retrofit properties, which could include overhauling central heating systems and replacing old and inefficient boilers with more up-to-date and greener condensing boilers. By 2050, greenhouse gas emissions from electrical appliances, heating and lighting need to be almost zero in order to support the UK in reducing its emissions by 80 per cent. As such, local action is important, the government claimed.
