Could composites hold the key to improved emissions performance?
Aerospace Engineers in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield are examining the influence of using composite materials in aircraft structures on aircraft emissions. The work, subject of an Omega study, will lead to a clearer understanding on the benefits and hazards associated with composites across their whole life cycle. The study comes at a time when large aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus intend to rapidly increase the production of composite components for civil and military applications. The U.S. Department of Defense has set a strategic goal to boost the use of lightweight composites – a 100-fold increase is expected in the next 30 years. The next generation of civil aircraft are likely to employ optimised composite structures with complex shape designs and equally sophisticated manufacturing processes. This study addresses all emissions associated with the use of composites, storage, inspection and disposal at the end of their life cycl
