Polls around the United States show Democrats with a great opportunity to win control of the United State Congress, the lead in state Gubenatorialships, and state houses. The wave of Democratic support is the strongest it has been in decades, yet two very blue states (California and Maryland) may re-elect centrist Republican governors. The effectiveness of the 2006 elections will be measured at all levels of government. Iraq and disapproval of the Bush Administration is helping Democrats in their effort to regain control of Congress. It remains to be scene if Republican disapproval at the national level will translate into Democratic gains at the state level of government. If Republican governors hold on and win re-election in California and Maryland, the GOP will have to decide its sourse of policy entering election 2008. The governors of these two states are fiscally conservative and socially moderate. They are pro-choice and unafraid of using government as a tool to provide services
