Some people might consider the number one disadvantage to be its ubiquity. Coca-Cola is the market leader and positions its namesake beverage as more than just a drink, but a way of life (“The Coke Side of Life). To achieve this, you’ll find Coca-Cola and its logo in many places transcending the actual beverage drinking occasion. A smaller or niche brand can position itself as more genuine or more authentic (read better) simply by focusing on the attributes of the beverage itself, implying that a drinker doesn’t need the validation of the brand name that everyone else is drinking in every other place in the world. “Don’t want to be looped in with the screaming masses that follow American Idol? Don’t drink Coke. Drink our product.” Some consumers get benefit out of the “undiscovered” or the “next big thing”.
