Could anyone let me know as to what owls eat?
It very much depends on the owls, there are more than 70 species in the world and all have a diet that suits their particular environment. In the far north, Snowy Owls and Great Grey owls mainly feed on lemmings. In Europe, (UK) Tawny Owls and Barn Owls, generally eat small rodents, but it really depends on what the food is locally. For example, some of the boxes I check, for Tawny’s, it is obvious that young rooks, still in the nest are the main food source, in others it is rabbits. Barn Owls commonly eat voles, but some, where the rat population is large, feed almost exclusively on rats. Little Owls, when I have found pellets, in the summer seem to be made up of beetle shells, but in the winter have found mice, sparrows, pipits, and rats in a box. (One yearwhen feeding young, I found that a little owl had killed a small rabbit and somehow got it into the box!) Some Owls actually fish for prey in the same way a Bald Eagle would.
