Feck. I spent a long time typing my previous answer, only for Yahoo to delete it! Champions League is for the top teams of a domestic league to participate in. Depending on the country’s coefficent the league might get a maximum of up to 4 slots. Currently the countries with 4 slots are Spain, England and Italy. Next are France, Germany and Portugal with three slots, and so on. UEFA cup is for the teams finishing directly outside the CL spots in the league and also the winners of the domestic cup. This comes from the old Cup Winners’ Cup, with was absorbed into the UEFA Cup in 1999. If there is an additional League Cup (like in England) then the winners of that will go into the UEFA Cup too. Again, coefficents determines the number of UEFA Cup slots each country gets. Most of the top leagues have three, but Holland and Greece each have four, which they allocate to the cup holders and the teams finishing below the CL spots, i.e. 3rd, 4th and 5th. (They both have two CL spots). Example:
