There are three basic parts to Japanese writing. Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Hiragana is usually the first thing a foreigner will learn. It’s mostly used for pronunciation. Katakana is how foreign words are written in Japanese. Kanji is the most complex of the three.Japanese kanji was adapted from the Chinese. However pronunciation and meaning are different than Chinese. Kanji is the word or letters that make up the word. Japanese is different than English and other languages because the verb always ends the sentence. They also don’t have an alphabet. The average Japanese high school student will need to know how to write in Hirangana and Katakana as well as memorize 3,000 to 5,000 kanji.
