Could a ignition coil in a 1983 VW Rabbit cause the fuel pump to not engage?

I know the fuel pump is good and the fuel pump relay is good also. It also doesn’t provide a spark but once in a great while after messing with the ignition same goes for the fuel pump, it wont activate unless you mess with the ignition. So any help would be greatly appreciated. Also it is a gas engine if that makes any difference. 1.8L from a VW Scirocco, doubt that would make a difference but just thought it could possibly be useful to know.
