Travellers checks are harder to use in Costa Rica since manyestablishments just don’t want them anymore. There are ATM’s all over the country except in remote locations so we just bring our ATM card and take money out as we need it. You can also use credit cards nearly everywhere though some cards charge a small “foreign transaction fee” of 1% or 2% of your purchase. You typically have to pay a fee to purchase travellers checks so the fee is offset by using a credit card. I prefer my “credit card” over my “debit card” since I am only responsible for up to $50 liabiilty on my credit card whereas a good thief could wipe out my debit card. They’d have to torture you to get the pin and that isn’t a likely scenario unless you plan on hanging out in San Jose in the middle of the night doing things you shouldn’t be doing.
