Codecs — what is a codec and why do I need one?
Short for compressor/decompressor, a codec is any technology used for compressing and decompressing data. In this case, the codec is used to play back your video files. Codecs can be implemented in software, hardware, or a combination of both. Some popular software codecs for computer video include Sonic, CyberLink and InterVideo. These software programs can be purchased online. You will need the proper codec installed in order to play back any transferred show on your PC. While most PCs running Windows XP or 2000 will already have the proper codec installed, there is a chance your PC will not. Because of this, a “codec check” has been integrated into the TiVo Desktop software installation process. During the installation process for TiVo Desktop, if you do not have the proper codec installed, you will be notified of this missing software component. If you receive this notification you will need to purchase and install the necessary codec software.
