Christmas tree plug melt down – please help!?

I am very worried because of this situation. My husband noticed our Christmas tree lights went out. Upon further investigation he found the plug where all the light go into melted down and a small burn in our tree skirt. I feel lucky that our house didn’t burn down and worried to set the tree up next year. It’s an artificial tree and it’s very tall. I have an extension cord with three outlets that runs up it. I’d appreciate any advice, suggestions, thoughts, etc. Thanks! A: There is a limit to how much electricity a wire can carry. DON’T plug all of your lights into the same socket! If this is a light weight extension cord, it probably couldn’t handle the electrical current that you were putting through it. YES, you were very lucky. You can buy a “heavy-duty” extension cord, 16 or 18 gauge, that can handle the heavier load. Also, try using more than one extension cord and running them to different sockets on the wall. Please have a safe holiday!
