Christians, what do you make of atheists and unbelievers who are well acquainted with the Bible and theology?

I have always been astonished by the number of Christians who assume that because I’m not one, I must not have the foggiest notion of Christianity, and that once this gap in my education has been filled, I must then be eager to accept whatever variety of Christianity they happen to be pushing. In fact, it really isn’t possible for someone to grow up in this country without being familiar with at least the basics of Christianity – it’s pushed on us from all directions. I once was a Christian, and it was the study of the Bible and theology that resulted in my leaving the faith. It’s called “critical thinking”; and it’s fatal to a faith that depends on believing the impossible.

My hubby is one of those very educated atheists who actually understand the principles of the bible and even how to apply them to life. He chooses not to believe a god exists but lives a more moral life than the majority of so-called christians. This tells me that faith is far beyond human reasonings and human understanding and that *most* people–whether christian or not have the capacity for the head knowlege. Knowledge does not save you…we are saved by grace through faith. Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” When there is a real relationship with God it goes beyond the Milk of the Word–which most people whether believer of unbeliever can understand–to the Meat of the Word. 1 Corinthians 2:14, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” This meat of the word is only spiritually discer
