Christians only: whats the difference between exegesis and eisegesis? Which is better in Biblical interpretation?
The difference between exegesis and eisegesis is the difference between using critical thought to figure out what the Bible actually means versus trying to make the Bible fit what you already believe. It is kind of the difference between old school literature classes where you were supposed to figure out what the author was trying to convey versus modern literature classes where any interpretation goes, it only matters what the material means to you.
Defining both is fairly simple. “Exegesis” is an objective interpretation; “eisegesis” is a subjective interpretation. The first consideration is in how each is applied, presented. From a purely human standpoint, there is no such thing as absolute objectivity, Divine influence notwithstanding of course. And there is no reason to believe that that influence is not subtle in either case. His Word does not return to Him void! His perfect will will be accomplished; it cannot not be!…Which also explains the latter question. By implication, my “hearing” the truth of His Word, whether it is through my own study without references or helps or listening to or reading others’ (sermons, teachings), is reliant soley upon His revelation. Therefore, I believe either is acceptable. Personally, I have learned to not “throw the baby out with the bath water.” Now, when it comes to non-believers seeking the truth? Putting on hold the philosophical or theological arguments, I will rest on Paul’s words t
