CHRISTIANITY! Why do we need the Gift of Discerning of Spirits?
The gift of discerning spirits is an important defensive mechanism against the devil. There are good spirits and there are evil spirits. The evil spirits come from the devil and are the fallen angels that were expelled with Lucifer when he was evicted from heaven following his war with God. Satan’s objective is the destruction of God’s Creation, and he uses his demons to this purpose. Demons must inhabit a living body, whether human or animal, in order to be affective. Since humans are the highest form of earthly life it is humans that they seek to inhabit first so that they can wreck the greatest havoc. To be able to discern these spirits in and around a person is to be able to avoid trouble. A believer in Christ cannot be possessed, but he/she can be tormented by spirits that are out of a body (termed as dragging around demons) or be tormented by unsaved persons possessed by demons. As I answered in one of your previous questions, like attracts like, but also unlikes repel. Discernme
As Christians we believe in the supernatural largely because Jesus engaged a lot in it – he cast out a lot of evil spirits and taught his disciples to do the same. Discernment is partly just about knowing what supernatural forces are around and being able to pray and take actions that mean that the bad ones can’t stop the good things we’re doing. It’s really not as weird as it sounds when you actually do it – so for example you might be praying for someone and sense that the person is being plagued by sudden outbursts of anger etc and that although this may be linked to psychological or circumstancial causes that need councelling etc there is also a spiritual hold that can be prayed into first. The gift of discerning of spirits means you can pray more accurately. It can also be helpful in deciding what to do – so for example a person might hear a person give some advice to the church and have a sense that there’s more to this than meets the eye… so they ask a few more questions befor
