Christian Fundamentalists: Where in the Bible does it say Scripture is to be interpreted literally?
Well, I think the answer is very complicated.. The difficulty is that the Bible is not one document – rather, it is a library of documents that range from accounts, to history, to letters, to songs, to poems, etc. Thus, some things should be taken literally, while others not so much. It’s just common sense. For example, take the Gospels. Sometimes, they conflict, but that is only because 4 people saw the same thing but in different ways. This is not to say it wasn’t inspired by the Holy Spirit – indeed they all were. But these were only humans who were writing everything down to the best of their ability. Indeed, the fact that they somewhat differ is a good sign – it shows that there was no intent to corroborate all the stories and actually cuts in favor of credibility. For instance, in any accident, if you have 4 witnesses, if they all say they saw the SAME EXACT thing, you would think they discussed it and debated it before telling the cop. Separate them, and you’ll notice some diffe
